Omar, his 3yo brother Esa, and 13yo older sister have just moved with their parents and he is anxious about starting a new school year. Fortunately for Omar, he has a great imagination and a fun family that help him navigate a new school, a bully who tells him all Muslims are going to be kicked out of the country and a cranky neighbor lady.
It is refreshing to see a loving and functional family in middle grade literature. It is also refreshing to read about Omar’s faith as a Muslim, which plays a major role in who he is, so it was a natural and enlightening part of the book. This is a great read for helping to understand Muslim culture, and Omar is a quirky, fun kid. The font does change size and style like a 6th grade girl with a new pen set, but that may be part of the charm for readers who like their text broken up.
