The PowWow Thief by Joseph Bruchac, illustrated by Dale DeForest, PICTURE BOOK, GRAPHIC NOVEL Reycraft Books, 2019, $9. 9781478868965

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Jamie and Marie Longbow are staying with their grandparents for the summer. Grampa makes beautiful jewelry that he sells at the pow-wows. While everyone is enjoying the smoke dancing competition, Sleepy Mickey is watching their booth. When the family returns, Sleepy Mickey is asleep and the most valuable beaded necklace is gone - along with Sleepy Mickey's cookie! Good thing Marie has an idea about who has it - and it'll take both of the twins to get it back.

A great #ownvoices picture book - the illustrations are bold and colorful, the story is told both in captions and word bubbles. I got to solve the mystery right along with the kids - good thing there was a big clue dropped early on. Because of the length and dual format (text and graphic) it may be a difficult choice for a read aloud, but great for story time with an individual.
