Amphibian Acrobats by Leslie Bulion and Robert Meganck - ADVISABLE

Amphibian Acrobats by Leslie Bulion, illustrated by Robert Meganck, PICTURE BOOK, NON-FICTION Peachtree, 2020. $16. 9781682630983

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

18 different amphibians are introduced through Leslie Bulion's clever poetry. Each poem is accompanied by darling illustrations and a great description of the amphibian. Frogs with poison skin - and spikes, frogs who tend their eggs in trees with dewdrops, there's even a toad in Venezuela that rolls up like a rock and rolls away from danger.

The illustrations are brightly colored, active and some show movement (when necessary). Best of all is the 14 pages at the end which include a glossary, ways you can help, resources including contact information for conservation programs maps showing were the stars of the book are from, relative sizes (compared to a standard pencil, and best of all, notes about the poems! Yes, this isn't just rhyming text, every poem is broken down with notes for the reader about the form of poem, what its inspired by, things to notice . . . wow, so happy to have this, now, do I shelve it with amphibians or in poetry. Better get 2 copies.
