BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
When a lone orca calf shows up in the waters off Seattle Washington, scientists discover she is about 300 miles from home. The orca population is well documented and soon they know who her family is and even her name, Springer. Being careful to keep her wild (by not playing with her or making her dependent) she is quickly moved to a facility where she can be brought back to health and plans can be made to reunite her with her family in British Columbia. Time is limited, as her pod will migrate north at the end of the summer.
Levi Hastings' beautiful watercolor illustrations support the detailed text perfectly. An incredible rescue and a touching story - so many people worked together to help this calf. The scene where she is returned to the waters of Johnstone Strait, welcomed by first nations, scientists and even eagles was majestic and touching. Budding environmentalists will love the story. Includes "more information" including maps, photographs, books and websites.
