The farmers who grow rice in China work very hard from early February through late October preparing the seeds and seed beds, planting and then transplanting (which is a community project - families helping each other), hoping that the weather will be favorable, and then harvesting, drying and milling the rice.
Hongcheng Yu's illustrations are exquisite. The endpaper drawings of the tools frame an amazing telling of the steps involved in growing rice. The full page illustrations are detailed and realistic, including the weather, cultural clothing, wildlife, children and adults. An afterword is included which gives more details about the growing process in both words and pictures. An excellent read for a class studying nature or China or rice.
