Yayoi Kusama Covered Everything in Dots and Wasn't Sorry by Fausto Gilberti - ADVISABLE

Yayoi Kusama Covered Everything in Dots and Wasn't Sorry by Fausto Gilberti, PICTURE BOOK Phaidon, 2020, $18. 9781838660802

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL, MS - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Yayoi Kusama is an artist who grew up in Japan and moved to New York in the late 1950's. She was a struggling artist who was aided by Georgia O'Keefe who introduced her to an art dealer. She liked to fill things with dots, cover clothing and furniture with unusual things and painted on people. She organized performance art she called "happenings" and even protested the war in Vietnam. Kusama is an inspiring and unique artist who is still active today.

Fausto's black and white illustrations are whimsical and fun - there is a splash of orange that is Kusama's hair in more contemporary times. A fun short biography, of more interest to the upper elementary or middle school students than a traditional picture book audience, consider the whole series, but preview them first to make sure the content is appropriate for your patron's ages - after all, it's art!
