An old man and woman send their six short sons out into the world to make their own livings. After a year, they come back and describe what work they have found to do. Told in the manner of riddles, the first son works with a thing with 8 legs, bringing it out of the water with a rope, the 2nd son works with things with 6 legs in a wooden box the 3rd son works with 4 legged things, etc. All were successful (even though they were short).
While the sons explain their jobs, the pictures show what they do. This would be a fun read aloud with a class, telling the story without showing the pictures and seeing if the children can deduce what they might be talking about. Some are easier than others, but all have great clues. The illustrations are clever and the story is unique.
