Uh-Oh, Hugo! by Jonathan Stutzman and Jay Fleck - ADVISABLE

Uh-Oh, Hugo! by Jonathan Stutzman and Jay Fleck. PICTURE  BOOK. Flamingo (Penguin), 2026. $19. 9798217039203

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K - ADVISABLE

APPEALS TO: SEVERAL

Hugo is up for a busy day. Lots of sniffing and running and sticky mess by the end of the day.

I don’t know why this is not a board book.  With its simple text and bold pictures, it is perfect for that format. For kids with dogs or without dogs, it is a simple look at a silly dog’s silly day.

Wild Princess knows that something is up. When she smuggles herself into a suitcase, she finds herself at a donation center, instead of with her people on vacation like she thought.

If only cats could read and understand the cat lesson here. Regardless, it is super cute.

Serafina Makes Waves by Matthew Burgess and Robin Rosenthal. PICTURE BOOK. Dial Books for Young Readers (Penguin), 2026. $17. 9780593699638

Have you ever heard that cats can't stand water? This is especially true for Serafina, a kitten whose parents have signed her up for swimming lessons. She does everything she can to avoid the water.  Will Serafina learn to love the water?

I absolutely loved this book!  The narrator talks directly to the reader which makes it even more engaging.  The text is very funny and overly dramatic.  The pictures are adorable and are filled with details that lend to the story.  Would make an awesome read aloud!

Four young kittens try to think up something special to give to Mama on her special day.  They realize that Mama loves flowers.  They couldn't find any flowers, so they decided to be creative and make flowers.  Oleander planted a seed in dirt and a can.  Tulip drew flowers with orange chalk.  Others found bits and scraps to make yellow sunflowers and pink tulips.  Blossom made up a song.  Will Mama like their gift?

Flowers for Mama encourages creativity, and is a heartwarming story of patience and love.

Freedman's illustrations are very charming.

Cranky versus the Cat (I can Read Level 2) by Phuc Trana and Pete Oswald - ADVISABLE

Cranky versus the Cat (I can Read Level 2) by Phuc Trana and Pete Oswald. EARLY READER. Harper, 2026. $6(pb), $16 (hc). 9780063469082

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

APPEALS TO: SEVERAL

Someone has left a big mess at the playground and Cranky and his friends need to clean it up before they can finish their important job. Turns out a stray cat has taken over the area and each step of the job the cat does something to aggravate Cranky - including eating his lunch.  But every bad cat also has a sweet side ready to be encouraged.

While the reading level seems a bit above a 2, the story is still a fun one for adult and child to read together - especially if you have a cat.  Or dog people can talk about what a stray dog might do differently from a  cat.

Crouton: One Cat's Adoption Tale by Kristine A. Lombardi - ESSENTIAL

Crouton: One Cat's Adoption Tale by Kristine A. Lombardi.
PICTURE BOOK. Random House Children's Books, 2026. $19. 9798217029167

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

While most adoption stories focus on a person finding a pet, Lombardi’s book is told entirely from the perspective of Crouton, a determined calico cat who believes she is the one doing the adopting. Crouton spends her days in a shelter crate, critically observing the people who walk by. She isn't just waiting to be picked; she’s interviewing for the perfect forever person.

This tongue-in-cheek approach makes the story feel fresh and empowering rather than purely sentimental. Lombardi gives us the ultimate ode to animals and their adopted humans. She captures the quiet magic of that first spark of connection at a shelter and will resonate with anyone who believes their pet chose them just as much as they chose their pet. It’s a simple, hopeful read perfect for families beginning their own adoption journey. The sweet illustrations are all done in pink, black and white.

My Cat is a Secret Agent is humorous and delightful. I enjoy Mahoney's quirky characters and artwork.

Have you ever wondered what your dog is saying?  The main character is a sweet little girl trying to figure out that very question.  She wanders through the barnyard asking the animals if they can understand her dog. Each page has a lift up flap that reveals which animal she is asking.   She realizes that just loving her dog is enough.

My Dog Smudge is a sweet story with soft and simplistic mixed chalk illustrations.  The lift the flaps were a fun addition that will keep readers guessing which animal comes next.

The little girl has caramel-toned skin.

I may have missed the first Fluffy McWhiskers book, but I am sold! I can't wait to share this with so many little friends. Tavis includes so many little details in the illustrations - I could spend extra time just enjoying each page.

Buttons rushes outside to share his small wonder with the world, but all the people in the street, and at the cafe don't notice anything.  Two new animal friends pick up the chase.  How will Buttons get people to notice the beautiful butterfly?

As the World Goes By inspires children to find the beauty and stillness in a busy world, and to appreciate the little things in life.  The illustrations are beautiful, interesting and action packed.
