The Three Monks by Shaobai Li - OPTIONAL

The Three Monks by Shaobai Li, illustrated by Juxiang Tao, PICTURE BOOK Reycraft, 2020, $19. 9781478868040

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW

Three monks live together in a temple on the top of a hill. They fight about everything, finally one monk suggests that maybe they fight because they are together in the temple all the time, so they decide to take a trip out into the world together - maybe having fun will keep them from fighting. It doesn't, they don't trust each other, are competitive, and they continue to argue. Eventually they find their way back to the temple, agreeing that things will be different.

I just didn't get the point of the story - unless it's to see that these three monks are buffoons, fighting over silly unnecessary things. I had hoped for an event that resolved their constant fighting. I didn't like the mixed media illustrations, either, they looked sloppy. The Three Monks is hard for me to recommend.
