Naliah is excited to perform the Vietnamese fan dance at her school's International Day. But when she tries on her ao dai, she finds out it no longer fits. She sneaks into her mother's closet and borrows one of her ao dais. While practicing her dance Naliah accidently rips the dress. Together Naliah and her mother repair the dress and as they work Naliah learns about her family and her heritage.
The illustrations are beautiful. The message of about staying connected to one's family heritage is an important one.
