BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE
APPEALS TO: SEVERAL
A young Cree boy watches skateboarders from his window and imagines himself riding a skateboard. His mother lets him use her skateboard. He practices around the neighborhood until he feels ready to go to the skatepark. At the skatepark, he is very intimidated as the other skateboarders crash down like a waterfall. While he decides to just watch, he makes a friend who is also watching. Will they ever feel brave enough to skate with the others?
Let's Go! Haw Ekwa! tells a story of wishing to do something and then gaining the confidence to try new things. I enjoyed the thought processes expressed. The illustrations are nice and painted in calming colors yet alive with action. The book setting is in a Cree community.
