Nicole Hammer and her family fled Guatemala City after an earthquake leveled their apartment building. Later they left their country entirely to enter the United States. Though Nicole struggled, not knowing English, she still found peace and joy in nature. She has dedicated her life to study the effects of climate change and help frontline communities ways to cope with this new reality.
Because Padron writes in the past tense, the book feels like the problems of climate change have been solved. The back matter has a more present tense note, but I wish that the ongoing work had been more emphasized in the main story. Also, the illustrations are unengaging - not a book I would read again just to enjoy the scenery. I do appreciate a book about someone who is currently working on the problems of climate - I don't feel this does Hammer's work justice. Most of the people are various ethnicities.
