Nine-year-old James Otis and his mama know what it's like to not have much. His daddy died and they lost their farm, now they are living in a little shack. So when Mama agrees to help provide a special gift for a family in need, James Otis wonders where the gift will come from, as they barely have anything themselves. His responsibility is a gift for Sarah - two years younger than him. Mama reminds James Otis that the preacher said " What is given from the heart, reaches the heart," so James Otis has to think of the perfect thing.
Patricia C. McKissack's final picture book (she passed away in 2017) is a lesson about selfless giving and storytelling, highlighted by April Harrison's beautiful mixed media illustrations. This is a grand finale! Be sure to read the dedication at the beginning.
