Stubby the Fearless Squid by Barbara Davis-Pyles - OPTIONAL

Stubby the Fearless Squid by Barbara Davis-Pyles, illustrated by Carolyn Conahan. Little Bigfoot (Sasquatch Books), 2019. $18. 9781632171993

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

When you are full of fear, it can make it hard to make new friends. Stubby decides to start writing letters to a razor clam and in these letters, both sea creatures brag about their wild and brave adventures. These adventures aren’t real, but when they finally meet they get to conquer their fears together.

This is a fun story, but the message seems to be that lying is okay. The line between storytelling and lying is delicate, but this fell too closely to the line for me. I also found the illustrations too soft and monotonous to be engaging.
