Ukpik has a new pappy to name and her father has also tasked her with teaching the other children about the forks, knives, and spoons that the Captain has brought as trade goods to their small Northern camp.
I am ambivalent about this book. Knowing the terrible things that have been done to Native communities, this book makes the interaction seem like a slow, mutually beneficial relationship. The pages are also text heavy, so I’m not sure that a teacher would read it aloud so that they can discuss t with the students.
