Marigold Finds the Magic World by Mike Malbrough - ESSENTIAL

Marigold Finds the Magic World by Mike Malbrough. PICTURE BOOK. Philomel Books (Penguin Random House), 2019. $18. 9781524737436

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Marigold’s plan for her birthday go wrong when the magic show she practiced for goes all wrong because she can’t remember the words to the spell. Instead of taking it in stride, Marigold gets mad and wishes everyone gone. Realizing her mistake, Marigold uses the magic words, “Thank you” and “Please” to fix everything.

The only thing missing in this book is rhyme. It has a good cadence, beautiful illustrations, and a good message. Because of the rhythm, I did expect some rhyme to keep the playful story bouncing. It does make up for this though but throwing in charmingly big words that are fun to say - “cockamami” and “guffawed” for example.
