BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
It's 1942 and Sam's class is knitting socks for soldiers. Sam is not a very confident knitter but his neighbor/friend Keiko is and she is willing to help him, but ever since the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, some of Sam's friends don't talk to the Japanese American kids anymore, and Sam feels uncomfortable. But then, Keiko's family is suddenly moved to an internment camp, and Sam looks for a way to say he's sorry.
Even the children during WWII helped with the war effort, but they also got caught up in the prejudice of the time. Malaspina teaches empathy and compassion as Ben struggles with his relationship with Keiko who shows him concern and love.
