Spencer and Vincent: The Jellyfish Brothers by Tony Johnston - ADVISABLE

Spencer and Vincent: The Jellyfish Brothers by Tony Johnston, illustrated by Emily Dove.  PICTURE BOOK  Paula Wiseman (Simon and Schuster), 2019  $18.  9781534412088

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) – ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Spencer and Vincent are brothers and best friends.  They enjoy floating around in the ocean together but one day a “wave of superior magnitude” separated them and Vincent is swept away.  Spencer does everything he can to find Vincent, and eventually with the help of other sea creatures they are reunited.

I read this to my two boys who are the best of friends and they both liked it.  I think it’s sweet to recognize the bond brothers share in this tender story.  The pictures are well done and there are a lot of different words that my boys enjoyed reading (blammed, blobbed, verve, fluke, superior magnitude). There is an author’s note at the end that gives some fun facts about jellyfish.
