A Puppy for Helen Keller (Tails From History) by May Nakamura, illustrated by Rachel Sanson. Simon Spotlight (Simon & Schuster), 2018. $18. 9781534429109

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

This is a Level 2 "Ready to Read" book that tells the story of an Akita puppy that Helen Keller receives from Japan. The book tells a bit about who Helen Keller was, a bit about the Akita breed, and even touches on the role WWII played in affecting Helen Keller's puppy. The story is just short of 30 pages long.

I enjoyed this story and appreciated the style it is written in for kids working on their reading skills. The story is interesting and any dog lover or history lover will appreciate it. The illustrations are nothing special, but service the story fine. Overall its a fine pick for readers who are approaching this level of reading.
