Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. PICTURE BOOK.  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018 (reprint).  $19.  9780544874350

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) – ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Stellaluna, a bat, gets separated from her mother when an owl attacks them one night. She falls into a nest of birds and tries to adapt to living like a bird. Stellaluna learns she is not quite like a bird, but they do have many similarities.

I loved reading this as a child and I still enjoy reading it today as an adult. The illustrations are wonderful and I love that on the pages with text there are small images of Stellaluna’s mother searching for her while the story is taking place. There is a great message about friendships even though there are differences. The book includes great facts about bats and the story engages children.
