Anna Atkin’s father is an entomologist. He takes Anna with him on his collection travels. He teaches her about specie nomenclature. Anna loves pressing flowers into books to dry. She also spends many hours with her father by the seashore collecting shells near the blue sea and under the blue sky. Anna enjoys drawing the beauty of nature she encounters. As an adult, her father involves her in a project to illustrate a book. Since she cannot be part of the scientific academia, she spends her time collecting specimens. Through cyanotype print, she learns to quickly make detailed prints of her collection. She produces many books over the years, starting with her seaweed collection.
The beautifully illustrated book, in blue print, about cyanotype and Anna Atkin’s contribution to the world of science captures the imagination while it teaches many lessons. These lessons include: parents can stimulate a child’s curiosity, the world is an amazing place full of new things to learn, plants and animals have scientific names, women can succeed at what they love, cyanotype is a beautiful way to capture nature, and love never dies. The book contains reproductions of some of her original work.
