Mirabel’s Missing Valentines by Janet Lawler – OPTIONAL

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) – OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Mirabel is very shy and worried about Valentines Day. She carefully crafts valentines for each of her classmates and heads to school the next day. On her way to school, a hole in her bag results in all of valentines falling out. They are each found by a person in town who really needed a boost. When she gets to school she is horrified, is her day ruined?

First off, these are some of the most incredibly adorable illustrations I have ever seen! I would have rated this book much higher, but I feel that it sort of ends on a depressing note. Each town's person that found one of the valentines was so happy. When they find out they are just lost, they still seem happy. I found this so sad. I think I would have liked this book better if it was about a shy girl who notices sad people around town and because she is shy she secretly leaves them valentines to cheer them up.
