Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal PICTURE BOOK Candlewick Press, 2018. $16. 0763693553

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Alma Sofia Esperanza Jose Pura Candela - such a long name! Then Alma's father tells her about all the wonderful people she was named for. Grandmothers, aunts, even a grandfather - all names to be proud of, but Alma is the best name of all - it's hers alone! I love how Alma peeks into the illustration of her ancestors, meets them, and then claims their name "I am Esperanza"!

Martinez-Neal has written a terrific story about knowing your family and honoring their lives. The pencil illustrations are beautiful and Alma is a splash of color. I can't wait to share this book!
