BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) -, EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Christine Darden were amazing women, and mathematicians. Their contribution to NASA's space program was invaluable - they couldn't have done it without them. They achieved success, becoming the first in their field despite bias and prejudice and segregation.

Shetterly has written a much abbreviated picture book version of her adult (and young readers) novel. Laura Freeman's illustrations are bold, realistic and vibrant. Would work well in a math class as well as a read aloud.
