 AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Although Shirley Chisholm spent her childhood in Barbados with her grandmother, and her first experiences in New York schools was difficult, she graduated with scholarships to top colleges. Choosing to stay at home in Brooklyn, Shirley became interested in politics eventually running for congress and serving there for 14 years. She was the 1st African American woman to run for President.

A great early reader biography, it has a good amount of text giving a nice introduction to Chisholm. I loved the full page illustration opposite the full page of text and the short chapters. Shirley Chisolm is a great role model, and this succinct biography is perfect for the reader ready to jump into non leveled books.
