The little boy's father works far away. The little boy loves when his father comes home. It isn’t often, so it becomes a very special occasion. The father planted a tangerine tree with his children and tells them to nurture it while he is away, and when he returns, the children and the tree will both have grown. The little boy loves and cares for the tree in his father’s absence. Then one day, he falls on the tree and it pulls out of the ground. He cries because he believes that now his father will not come home. His mother helps him replant the tree and promises that his father will always return no matter what.

When Father Comes Home is a book that would be excellent for families of migrant workers, or military parents who have to leave their families behind for extended periods of time. It is positive and uplifting, and would definitely serve as a comfort to those children who are missing their parents. This book could also be sad for children who have unstable parents that leave and do not return often due to reasons having nothing to do with jobs and providing for the children. It is one that a parent or caregiver would want to pre-read to make sure it is suitable for that child. It would most likely not be appropriate for any child in foster care.
