Cara and the Wizard retold by Liz Flanagan and Valeria Docampo - OPTIONAL

Cara and the Wizard: A Tale from Ireland retold by Liz Flanagan, illustrated by Valeria Docampo
48 pages. PICTURE BOOK, CHAPTER BOOK Barefoot Books, 2019. 9781782858423

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

When Cara's sister Molly disappears, Cara sets out on a quest to find her. After days of walking she hears that a certain wizard in a castle might be responsible. She is given advise from a tinker and an old man, and uses the simple things her mother gave her to rescue her sister and defeat the wizard.

"Cara and the Wizard" comes in a set of 4 books called "Stories From Around the World". This was darker and more sinister than the others. The wizard comes to a violent end. Perhaps this is more the style of Irish folklore, but as a story it was a bit scary for the intended audience. I loved Valeria DoCampo's illustrations, full color on every page.
