As a girl in the country in the 1870's, Gene Stratton loved being outside - and she was allowed whenever she chose. She even became known as the Bird Girl, because she could save almost any critter. Though she moved away from the farm at one point, she always found her way back to nature, working in her later years to help conserve natural habitat from destruction.
Lovely illustrations and nice portrayal of Gene's love of animals and nature. As an adult, if you only know her from her book The Girl of the Limberlost, there is much back story to learn about her - especially her ground-breaking bird photography. Good for a unit on conservation, photography, historical women and such.
