In the middle of the twentieth century a little girl was born. Her parents loved her and her grandparents adored her. She and her little brother had a lot of fun together. Then the Wall went up in Berlin, separating people. People on the west side of the wall flourished; there was no way to escape the gray, hard life on the east side. Finally, the Wall was torn down in 1989. The little girl was grown by then with a little boy on her own. She left and settled in Newfoundland. This became the land of the wind. She contrasts her two "lives" behind the wall and in the land of the wind.
The story is based on the author's real life experiences. Even the illustrations show the drab and dreary existence behind the wall. It shows how people felt constantly crushed with no hope. In contrast, it also shows bright colors, gardens, flowers and beauty of the free world. I liked this book, and a lot of children will have grandparents or great grandparents who were born behind the Wall, behind the Iron Curtain. I definitely recommend this book.
