Bess is a strong new barn, and one by one the animals who will live there come and find their place: cows, a cat and her kittens, even a barn owl is welcomed by Bess. Over the years she see new life come, and old life go as well as celebrations, including the celebration of the life of the farmer who built her. One day the farm is sold to a young farmer, who builds a fancy new barn. But can it stand up in a storm like Old Bess can?

I'm not sure if I like that the barn looks like she has a face or if it's a little creepy. That aside, I loved this endearing story about the value of old things. I've driven past many an old barn that looks like a bad storm would knock it down, but year after year, like Bess, it seems to be the sturdiest building on the farm. Well made buildings (and people) can stand up to a lot.
