BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
The octopus was perfectly happy in its ocean home until a human came by and plopped him into a glass case with the same food every day and not enough differences to keep him from being bored. Finally, he decides that it is time for him to escape and return to his own home.
Based loosely on the real-life adventures of an octopus escape artist. Meloy does a great job of getting into the head of the octopus and building empathy in the reader. When reading this with students, do a youtube search for “escaping octopus” and you’ll find several videos showing these escape artists at work.
