Hey, Dog by Tony Johnston - ESSENTIAL

Hey, Dog by Tony Johnston, illustrated by Jonathan Nelson, PICTURE BOOK, Charlesbridge, 2019. $17. 9781580898775

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

When a boy discovers a homeless dog hiding in the bushes, he carefully tries to care for it. Slowly and surely, by talking softly, being patient, bringing food and waiting, the boy hopes the dog will stop being afraid and let the boy give him a home.

I was so invested in this story I worried right along with the boy when his mom made him post "lost dog" signs. Jonathan Nelson's illustrations are so sweet - the tiny little bit of the dog that you see in the bushes tells so much even though you see so little. A heartwarming story about waiting, perseverance, kindness, quiet and love.
