Ducky by Meg McKinlay –OPTIONAL

Ducky by Meg McKinlay and Illustrated by Nathaniel Eckstrom.  PICTURE BOOK. Candlewick, 2018. $16. 9781536204223

BUYING ADVISORY:  EL(K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Duck runs through the farmer shouting Duck at all the other animals. Each of them misunderstand Duck in their own way, for example Horse is pretty upset by being called a Duck when he is actually a horse. Eventually Duck speaks up and clarifies what he has meant to say, but its too late. Features large bright illustrations.

The artwork is fantastic and the characters convey a lot of personality. The story, while personality irritating to me, could be fun for young readers learning about similarities and differences between animals. The ending is a surprise, but not one that I think could have been avoided had the farm animals actually ‘ducked’.
