AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
As a young girl, Barbara realized early that she had a physcially powerful voice and that, with more eduction, it could be strong metaphorically too. She could speak up for issues she cared about. Barbara went to law school and then into politics and eventually into congress. She stood up for the constitution during Watergate. When her body failed her, she moved back to her home in Texas and taught other people to use their voices.
The illustrations are made of cut paper and are very engaging. I had never heard of Barbara before reading this book and I was excited to read her story. I am thrilled that women of color are being represented in a variety of way in children’s literature. Barbara's story doesn't stand out as particularly notable, but still an important addition to the stories of history.
