I’m Not Using the Potty (Peep and Egg) by Laura Gehl, illustrated by Joyce Wan. PICTURE BOOK. Farrar, Straus & Giroux (Macmillan). 2018. $16.99. 9780374303280
BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K – OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Egg is reluctant to start using the potty and comes up with a variety of reasons she doesn’t want to. As the day progresses and Peep and Egg visit the cows, drink lemonade and even dance, will Egg stay strong in her determination to not use the potty?
Egg is repetitive and headstrong in her declaration that she will not use the potty, something that caregivers will be able to relate to. Peep leads her through a series of liquid and watery events and even dancing to encourage Egg to try out the potty. A realistic take on potty training that’s relatable and, although not laugh-out-loud funny, will make the reader smile.
