In 1968, the Apollo 8 crew headed out of Earth’s orbit and on to the Moon.  First they sent back pictures of the Earth in black and white, but as they continued to orbit they took one special picture showing the glowing blue Earth rising above the dull gray Moon in a stunning photo that people all over the world still adore.

It is utterly amazing to me that after all that we have learned about the Earth and the solar system that there are people who have decided that they are going to believe that Earth is flat.  Or that there are people who insist that one artificially bordered people are superior to another artificially bordered group of people.  I wish that the Apollo 8 picture could have changed people’s minds and hearts forever, but it didn’t.  Gladstone’s book still has a nice hopeful ring to it and the accompishment at the time was impressive.
