I'm Not Small by Nina Crews - ADVISABLE

I'm Not Small
by Nina Crews.
PICTURE BOOK Harper Collins. 2022. $18. 9780063058262

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

A young boy is big enough to go outside by himself. As he goes out into the backyard, he notices the size of the trees, his dog and cat. He is bigger than the cat and dog, but not the backyard. He encounters many outdoor features and nature to compare sizes with. The sparrows are small and sing prettily, the bee is small but scary in a big way, the ant is very, very small and his big foot could crush it. The boy enjoys his time alone in his backyard and learns just how big he is.

Crew’s illustrations in I’m Not Small are realistic and detail the experiences the young boy has in his backyard as he is outside by himself, being a big boy. The size differences shown are wonderful and will help younger children see the differences in sizes to many creatures in the outdoors, from the boy’s perspective. A lovely story that would be beneficial for pre school through Kindergarten.  The characters are Black.
