Maria Tallchief was born in the early 1900's in Oklahoma. She belonged to the Osage tribe. Maria started taking ballet lessons at age 3. She was the first Native American to become a professional ballet dancer. Maria is known as one of the most influential ballerinas in history. This book tells her story.
Maria Tallchief would work well as an easy, short chapter book for early readers. My concern is that interest in this book would be restricted to girls that like ballet. It is part of the She Persisted series. This series started out as picture books by Chelsea Clinton and have now branched out to chapter books written by several women authors.
