BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
Ludwig is pretending to talk to a rhinoceros in his bedroom instead of sleeping. His father comes in to find out who he is talking to. Ludwig tells his father that he is talking to a rhinoceros. His father tells him that it is just his imagination and that there is no rhinoceros in the room. They then have a philosophical conversation where Ludwig has his father look in every corner of the room for the rhinoceros to no avail, but still proclaims that his father cannot prove that there are no rhinoceros in the room.
I did not enjoy reading Ludwig and the Rhinoceros, and it is definitely not for small children. The philosophical message would just be confusing. The illustrations are florescent, avant-garde, quirky, and unpleasant. There is a section at the back with more information on Ludwig Wittgenstein, a philosopher, who actually had a discussion in one of his classes on whether or not there was a rhinoceros in the room.
