There is a beautiful rose that I always loved in my Grandma's garden. It was a creamy white that faded to yellow with pink at its tips. I always loved this rose. This delightful non-fiction book is about how that rose came to be. Francis Meilland lived in France on his family farm. He and his family were always passionate about planting. He met another gardener who taught him how to cross-pollinate roses to create different varieties. Even through the midst of World War II and war-torn Europe he never gave up on his dream to create a beautiful rose.
Roberts does a beautiful job telling this true story. The watercolor illustrations make this book so enjoyable to read. They are so lifelike and absolutely stunning. The detail in the artwork brings this story to life. The writing is also very descriptive using wonderful adjectives to create a visual in the mind of the reader. I also related to the story because my grandma had them in her garden. I loved spending time there and it was exciting to learn how it came to be. Both male and female genders are represented and the illustrations do an amazing job capturing the hairstyles and clothing of the World War II time period.
