BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Scharnhorst has the most hilarious way of telling a fun story about a school class spending a field trip in the mountains. It is not your usual school class. The teacher is a grizzly. The classmates are a crocodile, a skunk, 3 monkeys, a gorilla, a snake, a mouse, AND....one little boy. He reminds me of Russell in the movie Up. Everyone at Wildwood Elementary is enjoying the field trip but the little boy. He seems to keep running into challenges with nature that are not easily solved. His other classmates have natural instincts to survive and he starts to realize the difference.
This story is written in diary form and the humor is quite funny. I chuckled several times through this book and I could not help but smile in other parts. Patton has a clever way of illustrating to make the story fun to move through. This is definitely a book I will be reading to my grandkids. The diversity is in the animals and not the humans because there is only the little boy and he is Caucasian.
