AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

A shy sweet girl who comes in during recess to hang out in the library instead of playing outside. Her mom owns a diner and a biker lady has just finished a piece of pie and reading a book of poetry. She gives the book to Nicky to read. Some time later Maggie the biker brings a bunch of her friends from the Biker Lady group to try out her mom's delicious pie at the diner. Nicky realizes they all have a passion for motorcycles but they are all very diverse and different. The librarian is going to be gone for a whole week at a conference and Nicky is forced to go outside. She goes and sits under a tree and reads her poetry book. She soon realizes there are others like her that share the same passion for reading.

Being a librarian I naturally fell in love with this story. The illustrations are full of classic book pockets and library catalog cards and book checkout slips. She has collaged them into her illustrations. She uses blue colored pencil for the people and the shelves and other things are tan. The story is such a good lesson about the possibility of seeing outside of your bubble and realizing there is more to life than the way you think. The illustrations have not given any color to people's faces and yet their hairstyles lend themselves to a wide variety of diversity. All the people in the story are women so I think it will appeal more to girls.
