Kevin the Unicorn: It’s Not All Rainbows by Jessika von Innerebner - ESSENTIAL

Kevin the Unicorn: It’s Not All Rainbows by Jessika von Innerebner. PICTURE BOOK. Dial Books for Young Readers (Penguin Random House), 2019. $18. 9781984814302

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Kevin is a unicorn in a magicly awesome world, but he is still having a very bad day. He tries to smile through all of it but finally loses his cool and admits he is not having an awesome day. This allows others to confess to also having bad days and recognizing that that is okay.

Yes to all of this book. The male unicorn, the optimism of Kevin, the community that comes from honesty. I love that Kevin did not wallow in being sad paired with the message that being sad isn’t a bad thing sometimes.
