A Cherokee family lives in a cabin under a big hickory tree, weaving and cooking and waiting and worrying - they have a family member serving in a war. She's a pilot who prays she will return to her family safely.
Traci Sorell's beautiful poem is accompanied by wonderful illustrations by Weshoyot Alvitre. I loved how the illustrations of the grandmother's weaving tie everything together, embracing the family and holding everything together - how important family and traditions are. The author's note about Native Women serving in wars, particularly Ola Mildren "Mille" Rexroat's story helps give perspective and makes a re-reading more meaningful.
