BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Aunt Pearl is homeless. Dan and Marta have never met her, but when their mother, Rose, invites Aunt Pearl to live with them, she arrives with her "worldly goods" in a shopping basket. Marta skips day camp to go searching through trash cans with Aunt Pearl, and comes home with an old chair that Rose will not let in the house. It's good to give things a "second chance."
Beautifully illustrated by Irene Luxbacher, homelessness is a timely topic and it is treated with kindness and respect, however, the story leaves more questions than answers. I would have liked an author's note or more information in the text, or even links to sources for helping the homeless, or mental illness or something. I was disappointed in this promising picture book.
