The Beast (Darkdeep #2) by Ally Condie and Brenden Reichs, 325 pages. Bloomsbury, 2019. $17.
Content: G (mild fighting)
BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Even though they survived their first challenge and have committed themselves and Torchbearers, Nick, Opal and the others are flailing a bit as they try to figure out what being a Torchbearer actually means. And Opal hears a voice in her head — could it be Thing? She’s reluctant to let the others know, but the lice does seem to be leading her in the right direction. Plus, the whole town seems to have Beast fever, which is bringing in the tourists by the boatload, including a YouTuber ghost hunter, who is more than happy to exploit the entire situation for fame.
The beginning dragged just a bit as Nick and the others are running around town while staying under the radar. Then suddenly, things start happening big time. I’m not giving away any spoilers - lets just say that betrayal come in many forms!
