BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Norman Rockwell enjoyed drawing as a child
and was often encouraged by his father and friends. After art school, Norman would take all sorts
of odd jobs just so he could be an artist.
At twenty-two, Norman’s illustrations were sold to the Saturday Evening
Post and he drew acclaim through his many drawing for that magazine. Rockwell went on to draw thousands of great
pictures and is known for the way he captured everyday America during the 1900’s.
If you have an aspiring artist, this picture
biography is a great way for them to see one artist’s journey. The illustrations are clean and attractive
and are a great homage to Rockwell’s artistic style. There is a more in-depth biography and
timeline about Rockwell’s life at the back of the book. This would be fun for an art class or
biography unit.
