BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL(K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Lula and her family have always lived right at the beach, but now a new highway is coming through and despite their best efforts their home will be bulldozed and they'll have to move. On one of her final days there, Lula walks the beach and rescues a very tiny cephalopod from being eaten. She names him Bean, feeds him bits of her sandwich, and is glad to have made a friend. The next day she returns and Bean has grown--a lot. Eventually Bean is huge and shows up right at Lula's house in the nick of time to stop the bulldozers from forcing the family out.
Sometimes you just want a picture book with no deep message, no lesson to learn, but just a fun story. Alex Latimer has absolutely delivered with this delightful beach tale about a girl and her sea monster friend, Bean. The illustrations and story are delightful, and this makes for a very fun read aloud. My kids loved seeing how big Bean would get every time we met him again. This will be a favorite around our house for a good while!
