When Marvel’s father dies, her family moves into a small shack in the woods. Because of the Great Depression they have very little money and need to be self sufficient, so the 8 children all do their part to help out. They work together, make up games and although times are tough, they build happy memories.
Oh the illustrations! Eliza Wheeler has captured these children and their surroundings beautifully. I can tell it’s written with love. The illustrations show how much they struggled, but the narrative is about family, and hard work and being together and happiness. My mother would have been Marvel’s age, and reflecting on this time through another child’s eyes - I can’t stop crying, but they are happy tears! Brava Eliza, for saving your family story, and for sharing it so beautifully.
