Beverly Cleary was a struggling reader - contracting smallpox put her behind in school, but an encouraging teacher's support (and a rainy day) inspired her. She always loved to write and became a children’s librarian where she realized that the kinds of books the children wanted still needed to be written. She accepted the challenge adapting stories from her childhood and eventually stories about her own children and created Ramona, Henry & Ribsy, Ralph S. Mouse and more.
I can’t get enough of these short picture book biographies! David Hohn’s pictures are splendid and Conrad's text is concise - perfect for an elementary reader. Includes a thorough biography at the end including a timeline. I hope this picture book can encourage a new generation of readers to try Beverly Cleary.
